Yoga stands for health and peace. It is a unique form of exercise which involves gentle stretching of all parts of the body combined with relaxation. It can be undertaken by people of all ages and ability. Yoga is not competitive and everyone is encouraged to work at their pace.

Although Hatha Yoga was espoused as part of ancient Indian scriptures (known as Vedas, meaning knowledge), it is not strictly religious and can be learned and performed by people of any faith or belief.

According to Swami Sivananda, one of modern proponents of Hatha Yoga (as known in the West), Yoga is a complete lifestyle in itself combining the following elements:

  1. Proper exercise
  2. Proper breathing
  3. Proper relaxation
  4. Proper diet
  5. Positive thinking and meditation

Since July 2013, a Yoga group has been set up in Loudwater to promote healthy living for the residents. The classes are conducted by Dr Tarun Mittal who is a hospital consultant and a trained Sivananda yoga teacher. Currently the classes are being held at his house on Sundays from 9:00 to 10:00 am.

If you wish to participate, please email t.mittal@outlook.com or mittaltk@msn.com or call 01923 712128. The classes are free of charge, but voluntary contributions are welcome for Mahak, a charity providing education to children from lower socio-economic classes in a school in India.
